Chapter seven is home to the events in the Training Centre and the discussion of strategy going into the games. The tributes have three days to take advantage of the Training Centre, they are able to visit specialist in certain areas of expertise considering survival and skill. They are given the opportunity to educate themselves with things that will help them survive in the arena. After the three days they have a chance to perform any special talent in front of the game makers. They are scored on these performances and each one is scored and revealed the next day. Although what they do is kept secret, the scores are still announced for everyone to see. It gives the audience a starting place for the betting that will continue throughout the Games. The number, which is between one and twelve, signifies the promise of the tribute. Peeta scores an eight, Katniss pulls through with an eleven!
As for the strategy discussed in this chapter- Haymitch has instructed Katniss and Peeta to act as if they are friends even though the point of the games is for them to eventually kill one another. He tells the pair what stations to go to during the training days.

After the ending of these chapters, the elements of a romance have sprouted into the novel. In chapter nine of The Hunger Games, the interviews are held. Each tribute is given a three minute interval with host Ceasar Fickerman to let the audience get to know them as people. It is another opportunity for them to catch the eye of possible sponsors, or even land sponsors. Katniss and Peeta are both coach separately by Haymitch for how to handle their interviews. He helps them to find an “angle” at which to approach the interview, so basically a character type; humble, charming, fierce or remote? Neither knows what to expect from each others interview.
During Peeta’s interview he does something much unexpected, he declares his love for Katniss.
This confession throws a spin into the games since they both can’t survive. Peeta announcing his feelings for Katniss adds more tension to the games and gives viewers another reason to watch. How will Peeta and Katniss act once they are in the arena, will Peeta fight to keep himself alive, or to keep Katniss alive?
